Portugal Cove-St. Philip's covers over 56 sq. km (21.5 sq. mi.) and is on the border of St. John's on the east, and Paradise to the west. St. John's and St. John's International Airport can be reached in 10-15 minutes from Portugal Cove-St. Philip's.  The town was originally founded by the Portuguese before being taken over by the French and eventually the British.

Portugal Cove-St. Philip's ferry terminal provides access to Bell Island, from where many commute to work in the greater St. John's area.
