First discovered in 1497, St. John's is the oldest city in North America. Today this provincial capital is home to 100,646 residents, and is the economic and cultural centre for Newfoundland and Labrador.

Visit the setting for some of history's famous events, including Signal Hill National Historic Site where the first transatlantic wireless signal was received in 1901. Adjacent is the Johnson GEO Centre, which features the geological history of the region and has walls made of 550 million year old exposed rock. North America's oldest surviving lighthouse can be visited at Cape Spear National Historic Site, situated on the most easterly point of land in North America.

View the whales, seabirds and other marine life just offshore. More nature can be seen at The Memorial University of Newfoundland Botanical Garden. Walkers will enjoy The Grand Concourse, a 120 km (74.6 mi.) network of walkways linking the green spaces of St. John's and the Towns of Paradise and Mount Pearl.

St. John's has several museums and historic buildings, including the replica late 1800's drug store called the James O'Mara Pharmacy Museum. The twin 43-metre-high towers of the 1850 Basilica of St. John the Baptist can be spotted from many parts of town. View them while enjoying a boat tour of St. John's harbour.
