Avondale is located on Newfoundland's Avalon region. Avondale is situated at the southwestern head of Conception Bay and it 59 km (37 mi.) southwest of St. John's and 72 km (45 mi.) northeast of Placentia. The town of Avondale was established in the late 1880s during the construction of the Newfoundland Railway.

Keep an eye out for the disappearing church as you drive into the town. There's an optical illusion in effect due to the topography. Check out Avondale's restored heritage Railway Station. You can also take boat tours, ride horses and golf nearby.
