The Avalon Region is a peninsula which includes Canada's most easterly point at Cape Spear, and Newfoundland & Labrador's capital city of St. John's.

Highlights of the Avalon peninsula include natural scenery as well as historic sites. The rugged coastline offers many views of seabirds, whales, and seasonal icebergs near the four major bays - Conception, Placentia, St. Mary's, and Trinity. The Ocean Sciences Centre in Logy Bay offers guided tours and up close visits with seals. Newfoundland's oldest stone church, St. Paul's Anglican Church, was built in 1835 and is in Harbour Grace.

The cliffs at Redhead Cove are as red as the name suggests, and whales can be spotted in the cove at times. St. Mary's Ecological Reserve at Deer Lake is a provincial seabird sanctuary and a large nesting colony of the two metre wing spanned gannets. Millions of birds, including the Atlantic Puffins, can be viewed at the scenic Witless Bay Ecological Reserve. The nearby Avalon Wilderness Reserve offers hiking, canoeing, and fishing.

An archeological dig at Ferryland is revealing Sir George Calvert's first settlement from the early 1600's. The Fishermen's Museum in St. Vincent's features the old way of life of small fishing villages that once thrived off the Grand Banks' rich fishing grounds. Argentia was an important military post for many years, and now is where to catch the ferry to Nova Scotia.
