Stephenville is located on the north shore of St. George's Bay.  Originally known as the Acadian Village, Stephenville had a second moniker, Indian Head, from 1848 until 1870. With Stephenville being used from 1874 onward.

In 1941, the USA negotiated a lease for land to build an air force base. The Ernest Harmon Air Force Base operated until 1966 when its primary use as a refuelling point was no longer required.  The air base had a huge impact on Stephenville and it expanded the town from a population of hundreds in 1941 to thousands in the 50s.

Due to the landscape, there is much outdoor fun to have in Stephensville.  Two scenic drives include The French Ancestors Route and The Caribou Trail.  Check out place names like Cap St-George and La Grand Terre or with the Caribou Trail, you may see some of the 60,000 caribou that inhabit the route through the Long Range Mountains.
