With a 500-year history, Burgeo has been called home by native peoples, as well as Europeans who started to settle in good numbers in the 1790s. In 1962, Burgeo was home for a few short years to the controversial author Farley Mowat.
Key Burgeo sites include the local museum, Sandbanks Provincial Park, Eclipse Island (named by Captain James Cook during a solar eclipse), and the King George IV Ecological Reserve (the largest undisturbed river-delta system on Newfoundland.)
